Our History

The Oregon, Washington, Northern Idaho Hereford Association (OWNI) was founded in 1976 by a group of Hereford breeders who desired to promote this efficient and adaptable breed. During proceeding years, they worked with the Junior Hereford Association to sponsor field days for the youth, and also organized tours of the members ranches and other companies working to market cattle through this area. Similarly, members sponsored scholarships for high school graduates whose families were members of the American Hereford Association.
Today, we continue our scholarship tradition by providing a $100 award to champion or reserve champion exhibitors of purebred Hereford steer shown in terminal shows within the OWNI region. Our membership also promotes the Hereford breed by sponsoring the Northwest Hereford Bull Sale, which began in 2009 and takes place annually on the first Thursday of March at the Double M Ranch Sale Facility in Stanfield, Oregon. This features yearling bulls that have been fed at the Bonina Feedlot in Eltopia, Washington, where they are developed on a 100-day roughage-based diet for ADG comparison within their contemporary group. The sale has expanded to include yearling Hereford or Hereford crossbred heifers.
